Welcome to Hell...

...And the three-headed hound Cerberus that guards the gates of the underworld, preventing your escape is the subject of my latest painting.

"Cerberus Pugnacious", 2010

30" x 30", oil on cradled panel

I got the inspiration for this painting from my friend's pug. Camus (Yes, he's named after the French existentialist philosopher and author Albert Camus.) is a gentle and friendly dog, but with his jet black fur and wicked under-bite he always reminded of a "devil" dog.

When I was searching for pics and videos of Cerberus I came across this clip from the original "Clash of the Titans" movie, circa 1981...

A two-headed Cerberus? Supposedly the reason there were only two heads instead of three, was simply that Ray Harryhausen didn't feel like animating the extra head. Although he did manage to animate most of the snakes on the gorgon Medusa's head in the scene immediately following the above one. Its one of the most suspenseful in the movie. The stop action animation makes this clip especially creepy for me. Stop action rules! That 3-D CGI shit will ruin your eyes.

I turn to stone

When you are gone

I turn to stone

Turn to stone

When you comin' home

I can't go on...
